Brokenwood Wines have taken significant steps in their commitment to sustainability by becoming a member of the Sustainable Winegrowing Australia Program in 2019 and achieving certification for their Hunter Valley-based winery and vineyards in 2021.
Underpinned by the Freshcare AWISSP standards, certified Sustainable Winegrowing Australia members can visibly demonstrate to customers and consumers that their sustainable practices meet rigorous, globally recognised standards.
For Sustainability Lead Lorrae St Vincent, implementing sustainability practices at the Brokenwood vineyard and winery has not only had a measurable environmental impact but also benefited their economic business.
Increasing domestic and export market demands for sustainable Australian wine was initially the significant driver for Brokenwood to become certified through Freshcare.
“There is a demand now from overseas markets to have third-party accreditation of your practices. This has certainly opened doors for us and has become now, a necessary requirement to do business, a basic licence to operate,” says Lorrae.
With Freshcare certification, consumers can trust that Brokenwood are dedicated to maintaining the highest standards – for the benefit of the environment, their business, the community, and the Australian Wine Industry.
One of the main challenges facing the global wine industry is the changing, more extreme weather patterns caused by climate change.
Lorrae says adapting sustainable practices to Brokenwood’s vineyards will ensure the quality and longevity of the wine and business.
Implementation of Freshcare’s sustainability standards as a framework for Brokenwood’s viticulture and winery practices ensures that Brokenwood Wines can continue producing outstanding wines while preserving the land they’ve farmed on for future generations.
